Celebrating 100 Years of The Plaza Hotel: A Milwaukee Icon with a Fresh Look

Tuesday, Jul 8  ·  In The News
This year, we’re proud to celebrate 100 years of history, hospitality, and heart in the city we call home. And yes, we’re marking the occasion in style—with a refreshed logo.

A Century in the Making

Built in 1925, The Plaza Hotel has stood tall through decades of change, challenge, and celebration. Originally constructed as two buildings and inspired by the bold elegance of the Roaring Twenties, the hotel quickly became a standout with its Art Deco architecture, geometric designs, and European flair. From etched glass accents to sweeping staircases, every corner of The Plaza tells a story—and many of those stories are still unfolding.

Through the Great Depression, the hotel adapted in simple but meaningful ways—swapping expensive paint colors for more modest whites and greys, a quiet nod to resilience in tough times. During World War II, The Plaza stepped up to serve the city: acting as one of Milwaukee’s first bomb shelters and offering cots to sailors passing through. Community has always been at the core of who we are.

Then in 1950, something magical happened: a humble lunch counter opened in the hotel, and Café at the Plaza was born. Today, it’s still one of Milwaukee’s most beloved brunch spots, known for its timeless charm, fresh local ingredients, and that same original counter. Yes, it’s still here, and it’s still serving up smiles (and killer pancakes).

A New Chapter Begins

As we celebrate our centennial, we wanted our identity to reflect better our pride in this city we’ve called home for 100 years. That’s why our new logo includes something that’s always been at the heart of who we are: Milwaukee.

We’re proud to be part of the city’s history, rooted in its past, and growing with its future. Owned and operated by the Crichton family since 1984 —only the second owners in the building’s history —we’ve worked hard to maintain what makes The Plaza so special, while continuing to modernize and evolve with our guests’ needs.

A Place Where History Meets Hospitality

Walk through our doors and you’ll still feel the same warmth and character that has welcomed guests for generations. From the large potted plants and original wrought iron staircase to our European-style walk-up design (don’t worry, we’re happy to help with your bags), The Plaza is truly a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel.

We’ve preserved the details that matter —like our 70-year-old café counter and cozy suites with kitchenettes—while adding contemporary touches that make your stay feel effortless. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway, a special celebration, or just a good night’s sleep in the heart of Milwaukee’s East Side, The Plaza Hotel Milwaukee is your home base for everything this dynamic neighborhood has to offer.

Join the Celebration

This summer, we’ll be celebrating our 100th anniversary with special events, throwback nods to our rich history, and maybe a surprise or two. We’d love for you to be part of it.

Come by for brunch, book a night, or stop to admire our new look—we’re still the same Plaza you know and love, just with a bit of extra sparkle in our step.

Here’s to the next 100 years.
